The Analysis of Matter, by Bertrand Russell

The Analysis of Matter is one of the earliest and best philosophical studies of the new physics of relativity and quantum mechanics. Written at the time of major new developments in physics and just when quantum mechanics was being developed, Russell offers an analysis of the concepts and problems that are central to a philosophical understanding of physics, and argues for a revised concept of matter. The Analyis of Matter demonstrates the logical structure of the world and develops Russell's views on the philosophy of science out of the theories of such scientists as Einstein, Bohr and Heisenberg.

Review
`It is a profound book, the significance of which will increase with the years. Not since Helmholz has any one mastered physics, mathematics and psychology as Russell has.' - Herald Tribune

`The force of his long training in philosophy and mathematics forces each item in position and cuts it in the closeness of contact. He succeeds in establishing a way to think about physics - by making it, in spite of himself, metaphysical.' - Hound and Horn

`The whole book is candid and stimulating and for both its subject and its treatment, one of the best that Mr Russell has given us.' - The Times --Na

From the Back Cover

Arthur Conan Doyle’s second Sherlock Holmes novel is both a detective story and an imperial romance. Ostensibly the story of Mary Morstan, a beautiful young woman enlisting the help of Holmes to find her vanished father and solve the mystery of her receipt of a perfect pearl on the same date each year, it gradually uncovers a tale of treachery and human greed. The action audaciously ranges from penal settlements on the Andaman Islands to the suburban comfort of South London, and from the opium-fuelled violence of Agra Fort during the Indian ‘Mutiny’ to the cocaine-induced contemplation of Holmes’ own Baker Street.

This Broadview Edition places Doyle’s tale in the cultural, political, and social contexts of late nineteenth-century colonialism and imperialism. The appendices provide a wealth of relevant extracts from hard-to-find sources, including official reports, memoirs, newspaper editorials, and anthropological studies.

Really only for the completest
By Victoria Craven
Sherlock Holmes, the world’s first consulting detective, is bored. And when he’s bored he injects himself with one of two types of drugs–cocaine or morphine. His housemate and biographer, Dr Watson, hates to see the genius in such a state so when Mary Morstan turns up at 221B Baker Street with a puzzling case he is relieved. Relieved, and other things. Miss Morstan is rather fetching.

The young woman presents her story, which involves her long-missing father, pearls that began arriving mysteriously a few years ago and, now, a note promising to explain everything if only she meets a stranger that very evening and doesn’t bring any police. She may bring two friends, though. Holmes and Watson will do nicely and they’re certainly up for it.

Off they go and are soon mired in a story involving a locked-room murder and missing treasure and a boat race on the Thames.

And casual racism. Sakes alive, the casual racism. One has to be prepared for it in fiction from 100+ years ago–the Victorians in particular loved some anthropologically-based racism. They started stumbling across new races of people and immediately began ascribing all sorts of negative and offensive characteristics to them. This novel is particularly rife, though.

Story-wise I’d give this one a 4/5. Holmes is doing his typical deductive thing, which is why I like reading the stories and why I assume others do, too. If you’re a completest and want to read all of them then it’s a fine read, though if casual racism puts you off stories, this one is going for gold.

The Sign of Four is the second story featuring Sherlock Holmes. The first was A Study in Scarlet .

[Completely off-topic editorializing: Dang, white people are awful. Just because you own the world doesn’t mean you’re the barometer against what everything else should be measured. Reading it from the point of view of a person writing from the country that had the largest empire on Earth at the time is interesting in terms of getting a sense of ego. It’s a digression, but I kept thinking about it while reading the book so it became part of the experience of the novel for me.]

Still a great action mystery
By Narrelle
Of the novels, The Hound of the Baskerville is the best, but this runs a close second. It contains many of the passages which gave us the clearest idea of Holmes - who finds emotion clouds the mind, and 'cannot congratulate' Watson on his marriage for that reason. There's a vehicle chase (the steamers on the Thames) and secret treasures and distinctive, often grotesque characters and Conan Doyle's evocative descriptions of London and landscapes. The scene with Toby the dog on the hunt for a diminutive murderer and how that ends up is still one of my favourite passages, ending as it does with laughter.

The years since it was first published haven't diminished the power of the mystery, the personalities of Holmes and Watson (or indeed of London) or Conan Doyle's lively writing style. It remains a great adventure, enormously fun (even with the more awkward passages that appear within the context of its 19th Century origins) and of course a wonderful example of the appeal of the Great Detective, Sherlock Holmes.

the Sign of Four is the second of the Sherlock Holmes novel by the inimitable Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
By C. M Mills
The Sign of Four is the second of the four Sherlock Holmes novels to be published. it first appeared in magazine and book form in 1890. The story revolves around the theft of valuable jewels whose original provenance was in India. The plot is relatively simple and straightforward. One night a young beautiful blonde woman named Mary Morstan appears at 221 B Baker Street. A decade previous to her visit, her father Captain Morstan disappeared. Now Mary wants Holmes and Watson to locate his Indian fellow soldier Major Sholtoe. The major his dead but his two sons are still alive and in London. Holmes and Watson seek them out and this quest begins the adventure. Sholtoe is based on the real life playwright, poet and essayist the outré Oscar Wilde who knew Doyle. The plot culminates in an exciting sea chase down the Thames River. In this book Holmes kills a person which is the only time this occurs n the Holmes novels and short stories. Dr. Watson falls in love with Mary Marston and the two plan on wedded bless. The book begins with Holmes reaching for a seven percent solution of cocaine and ends with him enjoying the drug.
Holmes is a cold calculating machine who is a misogynist when it come to the fairer sex. Tonga the Andaman island shooter of poison darts and his evil friend Jonathan Small meet their just reward. Walk again the foggy gaslight streets of Victorian England at the height of the Empire s vast reach and enjoy your perambulation with Sherlock Homes and Dr. John H. Watson. A good book to read and reread. Enjoy dear reader!

The New Nobility: The Restoration of Russia's Security State and the Enduring Legacy of the KGB, by Andrei Soldatov, Irina Borogan

The security services have played a central—and often mysterious—role at key turning points in Russia during the tumultuous years following the Soviet collapse: from the Moscow apartment house bombings and theater siege, to the war in Chechnya and the Beslan school massacre. In this riveting investigation, two intrepid journalists penetrate the secret world of the FSB and illustrate how the security services have evolved into a ruthless, violently powerful force that is inextricably woven into modern Russia’s fundamental makeup, and has become more shadowy than its predecessor, the Soviet KGB.

Review

Kirkus Reviews, July 1, 2010
“A relentless investigation that demonstrates how, with Putin’s rise, the KSB has taken its place ‘at the head table of power and prestige in Russia.’ ”

Wall Street Journal, September 17, 2010
“Few people are better placed than Mr. Soldatov and Ms. Borogan to write with authority on this subject. They run the website Agentura.Ru, a magpie's nest of news and analysis that presents a well-informed view of the inner workings of this secret state. Given the fates that have befallen other investigative journalists in Russia in recent years, some might fear for the authors' safety. But the publication of the "The New Nobility" in English is welcome; it should be essential reading for those who hold nave hopes about Russia's development or who pooh-pooh the fears of its neighbors.”

Foreign Policy, September 17, 2010
“The authors bring hard-digging, fact-based journalism to an aspect of Russia that has been hard to document and understand… Sober and probing.”

Basil and Spice, September 14, 2010
“A non-fiction book that reads like a spy thriller… The New Nobility is an important book, well written and meticulously researched by two journalists with the right sources, both inside and outside the FSB.”

Sunday Times (UK), September 19, 2010
“This compelling book is a distillation of [Soldavov & Borogan’s] work on the website. Drawing on considerable research it describes how the KGB, for decades at the violent vanguard of the communist dictatorship, switched effortlessly after the fall of the Soviet Union, preserving the stability of the new ultra-capitalist Kremlin; same people, many of the same methods, different name and economic system.”

The Guardian, September 25, 2010
“Because every page in this book gainsays his claim in the most forceful fashion imaginable that democracy is now decisive in defining Russia's political direction…. It is the product of two profoundly courageous Russian journalists who are meticulous about their reporting…. It is because they are Russian and superbly professional journalists that this book offers dozens of insights that no outsider could provide.”

The Guardian, October 3, 2010
“If all of this still feels too frivolous, turn to The New Nobility, an inside look at the KGB by a pair of fearless Russian journalists, Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan. Charting the organisation's heyday, decline and creeping return to power, it promises to raise the hairs on your neck as effectively as Ackroyd's ghost stories.”
Financial Times, October 18, 2010
“A detailed dissection of the FSB, the heir to the KGB, which still casts a long shadow over Moscow. For more than a decade the two authors have run the website Agentura.ru, a gold mine of information on the inner workings of the security services, particularly the FSB. In a country where many journalists have been attacked or killed for speaking truth to power, their reporting has been brave.”
Mother Jones, November 2010
“The New Nobility is an unnerving look at the real power behind the new Russia.”

Russian Life
“For those looking for yet more evidence that the security services are pulling the strings in modern Russia, look no further than this extraordinary new book from the fearless journalists at agentura.ru. Soldatov (who has written for Russian Life) and Borogan have compiled a history of FSB activities and operations over the past decade that paint a very vivid picture of a security service that has become Russia’s new ruling class… With amazing accounts of some of the most significant security crises and counter-terrorist activities of the past decade, Soldatov and Borogan offer insights into FSB operations that have not been offered anywhere to date… A must read.”Irish Times, October 30, 2010“Impressively detailed and unsettling… Soldatov and Borogan have done an excellent job in shining a light in some of Russia’s darkest corners.”Moscow Times, November 12, 2010
“Fortunately there are inquisitive and intrepid journalists like Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan to bring nuance, analysis and old-fashioned shoe-leather reporting to the subject of the revival of Russia’s security services…. The authors pull no punches in their criticism of endemic corruption and incompetence in the country’s security forces. But they do so with a refreshing lack of hysteria, drawing conclusions from facts they were able to document and refusing to indulge in conspiracy theory.”

Literary Review, December 2010
“This important monograph, written by a brave and talented team, is a history of the KGB (now called the FSB) over the last fifteen years.”

New Statesman, December 6, 2010
“Drawing on extensive investigations, the two journalists have written a gripping account of how veterans of the KGB seized control of the Russian state… This book paints a chilling picture of a country dominated by a power-hungry clique. Anyone who wants to understand Putin’s brave new Russia should read it.”

Financial World (UK), December 2010“A thorough and very brave examination of an organization that has a tight political, commercial and economic grip on Russia”New York Review of Books, January 3, 2011
“As it has in earlier contests over leadership, the country’s all-powerful Federal Security Service (FSB) is bound to have a crucial part in deciding who will be the next president. (This agency made the original arrests in the Khodorkovsky case, discussed below, which has great significance for the presidential succession.) This is why The New Nobility, which explains how the FSB has evolved over the past decade into an organization with enormous political and economic influence, is such an important and timely book…. Using anonymous sources from within the security services and the Kremlin, along with on-the-spot reporting, Soldatov and Borogan have uncovered new and significant information on the FSB and its relations with the Russian leadership.”

Sunday Telegraph (UK) October 2, 2011“An authoritative and brave investigation into nefarious dealings by the Russian security service the FSB, which replaced the KGB an on which Vladimir Putin relies.”

Good but flawed on a number of points
By H. Williams
The main goal of the authors is to show that the FSB like the KGB and the tsarist's secret police before it have become the means by which the Kremlin controls Russia and in this the authors are successfull. They demonstrate how Putin has consolidated the FSB from the chaotic 90s and has used it to solidify his control over the country. They show how the FSB has played a role in the political, economic and administrative life of Russia. They give details about its involvement in the North Caucausus, the spy cases over the last decade and the hostage crises in the last couple of years. However, the authors have omitted a number of details that would have been interesting and it would seem that a number of their points are erroneous.
For example, there is no mention about the FSB's role in the Yukos affair and this is important as this was a turning point for Russia where Putin and his hardline allies in the siloviki were victorious in their control of Russia over the oligarchs. There is no mention of the FSB and Organized crime or of any possible role it played in information sharing with the CIA in the invasion of Afghanistan. No mention either of the role it played in the assasinations of Chechen warlords like Khattab,Arbi Barayev,Maskhadov and Basayev. The authors also make the claim that Nord Ost was a disaster but given the fact that the rebels attempted to attain some kind of victory, that many lives were saved and that by the authors own admission ,the operation was thought to be impossible ,I dont see how this could be so.
In conclusion,if you want to get a glimpse to how Russian politics works or of the role the FSB plays in modern Russia this book will be a great guide. If you were expecting details like how Christopher ANdrew has detailed the KGB and MI5,you will be sorely disappointed.

A vivid history. A must read.
By Paul E. Richardson
For those looking for yet more evidence that the security services are pulling the strings in modern Russia, look no further than this extraordinary new book from the fearless journalists at agentura.ru. Soldatov (who has written for Russian Life) and Borogan have compiled a history of FSB activities and operations over the past decade that paint a very vivid picture of a security service that has become Russia's new ruling class.

Today's FSB, the authors show, is careerist, clannish, suspicious and inward looking. Oh, and ruthless and absolutely unaccountable to any democratically governed body.

With amazing accounts of some of the most significant security crises and counter-terrorist activities of the past decade, Soldatov and Borogan offer insights into FSB operations that have not been offered anywhere to date, outside perhaps the FSB and the CIA. Certainly the Russian press has offered little in this realm since Putin, Edinaya Rossiya and the FSB stepped in to fill the power vacuum left behind when the Communist Party was sucked out into space. A must read.

Excellent Book To Explain Why Russians Are Unhappy
By Vladimir
If you want an inside look at what is happening in Russia today, this is the book to buy. It gives facts, details, and analysis of why Russia is becoming a lost opportunity for freedom-loving people.

Liberty and domestic spying are polar opposites, as Americans are slowly discovering. Russians were promised by Western journalists and Russian liberals alike, far more than democratic elections, they were promised freedom. And for a few years, they got it, but as Putin's internal security services were strengthened, Russians have lost much of their freedom, particularly freedom of speech.

It is risky now to demonstrate against the Putin government or even complain about some their policies. It is extremely risky to criticize local Russian officials in any form of media. State secrets seem to exist everywhere now. This may explain why some online Russian websites refuse to accept comments from readers in the West. Some, such as Pravda Online, seem to have closed down their forum permanently, while others have forums but Western IP addresses cannot register to comment. The FSB is watching everything, just as in America, the NSA is watching and listening and collecting data on everyone. And what good is all that information unless it is used?

What is striking are the parallels between Russian internal security services and American internal security services, virtual clones of each other, and perhaps designed by the same people? Alternative news media reported that Homeland Security hired at least one former East German Stazi official to design their structure and programs.

Could it be possible that in the near future, the vast databases of U.S. citizens will merge with those of Germany, France, Canada, Australia, U.K., and Russia, into one world-wide control system?

Will innocent U.S. citizens be hunted like Snowden for dissenting against the loss of freedom? Better read this book to see how bad things can get, because our government is on that exact path.

Review

'Janine Utell's Engagements with Narrative is a wide-ranging, well-informed, and appealing introduction to narrative studies. Its highlights include explications of cutting-edge theory, interviews with a diverse group of contemporary scholars, and provocative engagements with numerous print, film, graphic, and digital, narratives.' James Phelan, Distinguished University Professor, The Ohio State University, USA

'Clear and authoritative, with interesting historical tidbits and flashes of wit, this is an introduction to narrative that will help anyone quickly understand the basics of the field. Janine Utell explains key concepts and then shows how they work in exemplary texts. The abundant, wide-ranging examples--from classic literature, graphic novels, film, and t.v.-- keep the writing lively and consistently reinforce the many, intersecting identities and modes of narration in the stories we tell and how we understand them.' Anne E. Fernald, Professor of English, Fordham University, USA

'Engagements with Narrative is an excellent short introduction to its subject, and should prove greatly useful to students and instructors alike. Janine Utell clearly and engagingly addresses the elements of narrative and how they work in a wide variety of stories, from classic novels to recent films and graphic novels. Everyone will learn something from this rich volume--I certainly did.' Adam Potkay, William R. Kenan Professor of Humanities, The College of William & Mary, USA

'Engagements with Narrative is a lively introduction to narrative theory in its many forms. Particularly clear-eyed in its analyses of feminist plotting, it offers a broad range of approaches and examples, from modal philosophy to cognitive theory, Austen to Capote to Dangarembga. Each chapter ends by helpfully supplementing Utell’s perspective with questionnaire responses by other scholars in the field.' Paul Saint-Amour, Associate Professor of English, University of Pennsylvania, USA

'Wonderful ― Janine Utell has given us by far the most enjoyable and accessible introduction to story-making. Her book explores how the world of a ‘good story’ is constructed, encouraging readers to engage with key concepts, media and critical practices. More than this, she stimulates her readers to discover their own ideas and insights as they figure out how exemplary stories are shaped and structured. Highly recommended.' Nicholas Roe, Professor of English, University of St. Andrews, UK

'Janine Utell explores narratology in writing that is itself lucid and unpretentious. The style sets off her remarkable erudition as the perfect setting does a fine gem. This is a book that will become a classic.' David Cowart, Louise Fry Scudder Professor of Humanities, University of South Carolina, USA

Fast Food: The Good, the Bad and the Hungry (Food Controversies), by Andrew F. Smith

The single most influential culinary trend of our time is fast food.  It has spawned an industry that has changed eating, the most fundamental of human activities. From the first flipping of burgers in tiny shacks in the western United States to the forging of neon signs that spell out “Pizza Hut” in Cyrillic or Arabic scripts, the fast food industry has exploded into dominance, becoming one of the leading examples of global corporate success. And with this success it has become one of the largest targets of political criticism, blamed for widespread obesity, cultural erasure, oppressive labor practices, and environmental destruction on massive scales.

In this book, expert culinary historian Andrew F. Smith explores why the fast food industry has been so successful and examines the myriad ethical lines it has crossed to become so. As he shows, fast food—plain and simple—devised a perfect retail model, one that works everywhere, providing highly flavored calories with speed, economy, and convenience. But there is no such thing as a free lunch, they say, and the costs with fast food have been enormous: an assault on proper nutrition, a minimum-wage labor standard, and a powerful pressure on farmers and ranchers to deploy some of the worst agricultural practices in history. As Smith shows, we have long known about these problems, and the fast food industry for nearly all of its existence has been beset with scathing exposés, boycotts, protests, and government interventions, which it has sometimes met with real changes but more often with token gestures, blame-passing, and an unrelenting gauntlet of lawyers and lobbyists.

Fast Food ultimately looks at food as a business, an examination of the industry’s options and those of consumers, and a serious inquiry into what society can do to ameliorate the problems this cheap and tasty product has created.

Review
“Fast Food examines some of the serious controversies related to the fast-food industry, focusing with plenty of facts and figures on six of them: the industry’s globalisation; the nutritional quality and healthiness of its food and drinks; its mass marketing techniques, particularly aimed at children and young people; its impact on the environment; its massive influence on meat production; and the way the industry treats its workers. . . . Being well documented it is an important book” (Methodist Recorder)

“Fast Food is highly recommended, a timely reminder of exactly what’s happening in this pernicious industry. The only drawback is that consumers of fast food are unlikely to read this excellent book.”—OxVeg online (OxVeg online)

“Delves into the good and the greasy of the fast-food industry, uncovering how this cheap and tasty grub has become a staple in our culture.”

Quick and informative read.
By kevin pate
A good book on fast food in the united states. I was kind of sad at the repeating of a few paragraphs throughout each successive chapter, but perhaps this was an echoing effect that the writers were going for.
If you are looking for an in-depth analysis I would recommend a search for more focused topic. This is a broad stroke piece that touches on several topics and skims the surface of each.
